For the last two years, before both Memorial Day and July 4, my friend Jenny O'Neill has coordinated an effort to create a temporary memorial here in Lexington for all the servicemen and women who have died in Iraq. It's been in the form of an array of American flags planted in the grass at Thoroughbred Park, just across from the Herald Leader Building on Midland Avenue. The number of flags has of course increased tragically each time we've done it and here we are again, another year gone by and now 2,454 have died and 17,648 have been wounded. Planting the flags is a powerful way of remembering all these people and we hope that seeing the flags is a reminder for all the people who pass through that busy intersection over the holiday week-end.
We could certainly use some help setting it up this year, and would love for you to join us on Saturday morning May 27 at 7:00 a.m. at Thoroughbred Park. You can park across the street at the Herald Leader. Just bring a pair of work gloves and we'll see you there!
